• SDLA Encourages Members to Get Enough Exercise

The San Diego Lawyers Association is encouraging its members to get enough physical activities for their general health and wellness. The SDLA has lined up activities and projects this year, geared at encouraging their members to engage in fitness and exercise activities that could help them lead healthy lives.

SDLA Executive Director Robert Christensen says while lawyers are extremely busy, it will be in their best interest to carve out time for exercise. This is because apart from their job being mostly sedentary, the long hours of work, less sleep, and poor eating habits plus stress can take a toll in their health. “We want our members to be healthy, we want them to enjoy the fruits of their labor, we want them to live happy lives now, and it is all about balance and self-care,” say Christensen.

Christensen added that encouraging physical activities is also meant to combat the seeming epidemic of depression within their profession. This as the American Bar Association published a study noting a significant number of lawyers are experiencing depression. This was picked up by the website Rocketmatter.com who ran a series of articles on lawyers and depression. One of the articles suggested five ways to combat stress in the workplace, and one of the recommendations is to exercise frequently.

“Exercise is a proven stress reliever. While exercising, your body releases mood-boosting endorphins. Frequent exercise will not only relax you, but it can also increase your happiness, confidence, and help lower symptoms of anxiety and depression. Exercise can also help you fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night.”

The SDLA has scheduled this year a fun run for their members, their families and friends. The SDLA also has an annual golf tournament open to members, their other colleagues, family and friends. This year they will also be holding a cycling activity just for leisure and fun.

The association has also launched webinar series on healthy eating and exercise for busy individuals. At the same time, it also held a CSA fair meant to encourage its members to subscribe to community supported agriculture so that they could have access to fresh and organic produce, and ready to eat meals. It also partnered with a popular spa chain for special wellness packages for its members. National Lawyers Association

“We want to fully encourage all our members to take advantage of the health and wellness activities that we have lined up. We try our best to make these worthwhile so that they can be encouraged to spend time on it. We also try our best to make it accessible even to the busiest member – thanks to our webinar series that is widely appreciated by our lawyers since it is basically learning on-demand.” Christensen says.
